Remembering Julie Sooy (1967-2024)

A Legacy of Music, Love and community

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Julie Sooy, beloved music director of the West Michigan Flute Orchestra and Great Lakes Flutes Chamber Ensemble, on August 30, 2024. Julie's unwavering dedication to music, her community, and the beauty of nature touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her vibrant spirit and indomitable determination inspired us all and kept our organization thriving, building on the foundation that Darlene Dugan laid before her.

Even in her final days, Julie’s love for music shone brighter than ever. The West Michigan Flute Association Board and members of the Great Lakes Flute Ensemble stood in awe as she fought to attend the National Flute Association’s convention, where she had the honor of conducting both the Opening and Closing Concerts. In those moments, the joy of music surged through her, temporarily eclipsing her battle with cancer. As long as she had breath, Julie was thinking of music, of stories to share, and of how she could continue to inspire those around her.

Julie’s leadership was marked by compassion, strength, and a unique ability to craft musical narratives that left lasting impressions on audiences. Under her baton, the West Michigan Flute Association commissioned a number of powerful and meaningful works, including:

  • Jenni Brandon, America Belongs to Us, 2015

  • David Wells, Dugie’s Rag, 2016

  • Theo Ndawillie II, Not The End, 2017

  • Theo Ndawillie II, A Hoax, 2018

  • Jonathan Cohen, Blue Shift Red, 2020

  • Kelly Via, Meditation, Abide with Me, 2022

  • David Wells, Triptych, 2024 (in honor of Emily Brown)

  • Catherine McMichael, The Beacon, 2024 (in honor of Darlene Dugan)

Julie was more than a music director. She was a mentor, a storyteller, and a visionary who ensured that those she led had the opportunity to learn and grow together. Her ability to weave together musical journeys captivated audiences and brought joy to everyone under her guidance.

Her passion for the natural world, her explosive laughter, and her deep love for her family and faith were constants in her life. Julie’s spirit will continue to inspire all of us to move forward together. As we mourn her loss, we will do so through music, the medium she loved most. Together, we will heal, we will change, but we will always carry with us the essence of both Julie and Darlene.

Julie’s legacy will live on in the music we play, the stories we tell, and the community she helped build. Let us honor her commitment and passion by moving forward together, as she would have wanted.

Julie, you will always be with us.

Julie’s desire to share her heart through music and scripture captivated all who attended her memorial service. Friends, family, and community members gathered to celebrate a life rich in creativity and faith. The memorial service highlighted her profound impact on those around her, featuring moving performances of her favorite pieces alongside readings of cherished scriptures.

For those wishing to honor Julie's memory, donations are accepted to support initiatives that align with her passion for music and education.
